A tale from the Jewish tradition relates of a man who wanted to divorce his wife. The couple's Rabbi told them that since their wedding was a joyous occasion of celebration, they should likewise celebrate their divorce joyfully.
The husband planned a big party. He invited all the couple's family and friends. He drank a lot of wine, and in his state of intoxication, he told his wife that whatever she wanted, he would give her as a divorce gift.
The husband drank some more, while the wife urged him to continue drinking to celebrate their parting. He fell into a drunken stupor.
The wife had him put in her bed. He awoke in the morning, stunned to find himself in her bed and his wife gazing lovingly at him. He asked, "What am I doing here?" The wife said, "You told me I could have anything I wanted as a divorce gift. I decided I want only you."
This touched the heart of the husband deeply. He was pained with sadness at how he had failed to see how much his wife had truly loved him. Seeing again the love his wife had for him, the husband gladly embraced her as his wife. In awareness of such love, he never again took her for granted, and they lived together happily.
